Night-time Encounters with the Harrop Ghost

Years before the Ministry of Forests developed Harrop Nursery, an orchard grew on the property. It is believed that at some point, the owner was buried on the site and that, to this day, his ghost roams at night.

One evening, as Darrell Strom and Brian McCulloch left the shop and headed towards the parking lot, they heard the shop door slam behind them. They looked at each other and beat a hasty retreat knowing that they had just locked that door so they couldn't possibly have heard it slam.

There used to be an intrusion alarm in the shop. Something regularly activated that alarm in the middle of the night until we finally disconnected it. We could never find any evidence of intrusion or problems with the alarm.

Our trusty electrician will not venture unaccompanied onto the site after dark due to an incident that occurred many years ago. He was working on a heater in a greenhouse after hours and had gone to the centre of the house to turn the thermostat off. He returned to the heater, only to discover that it was still running. Thinking that he must be imagining things, he went back to the thermostat and found it was turned right up. He turned it off again and returned to the heater. It was still running. He raced back to check the thermostat and, sure enough, it was turned up again. That heater didn't get serviced and I don't think he stopped to pick up his tools before jumping into his vehicle and racing out the gate.

Aside from the odd greenhouse door that won't remain shut, there hasn't been much evidence of the ghost lately. But when I find myself called to the site in the middle of the night by our friendly environmental computer, I try not to let my imagination get the best of me.
